This is quite possibly the worst example of Flash abuse I’ve seen in a long time. It’s hideous, you can’t skip it and it redirects to a missing page.

And I used to maintain the Journal’s site. ‘Course the problem back then was Javascript abuse. *sigh*

What do you do when

What do you do when you’re told to write a backgrounder about a story you think is being ridiculously over-hyped?

You smile, grit your teeth and write the damned thing anyway.

Hey parents! Are your kids

Monday, July 30th, 2001

Hey parents! Are your kids sitting in front of the TV playing Playstation all summer? Is it impossible for you to get them to read a book that doesn’t have “cheats and hints” in the title?

We-hell, don’t worry. As it turns out, kids who play video games end up with powers of concentration and co-ordination which were only previously seen in elite athletes! WOW!

And reading? Well, that just makes you near-sighted, doesn’t it, Poindexter?

And exercise? Uhm… you don’t … really need that…. Elite athletes, remember? Besides, obesity-related diabetes may be on the rise in kids, but it’s highly treatable.

They have a picture of me dressed up as Uilleam on the Epoch site now.

I’ll have to find out if there’s a bigger version of that picture somewhere. You can’t admire my legs with a pic that size.

The pond in the background looks great, though, eh?

I don’t keep track of

Friday, July 27th, 2001

I don’t keep track of Queen’s football or anything now. But when I saw that the Queen’s solar car team placed fourth in the American Solar Challenge behind Waterloo, I admit, my heart sank.

Waterloo? Oh, the humiliation!

“Uh oh. John’s changed his front page back to ‘clippings and demo tape’ mode.”

“Yeah. Did he get his ass fired again?”

Well, no. But I have applied for another job in CBC New Media, so I thought the self-promotion front page would be better than the blog. My potential employers don’t need to know about “Things I learned at this weekend’s Epoch event,” I think.

Sunday, July 22nd, 2001

I’ve updated my on-line section with some of the backgrounders I’ve written for the CBC News Indepth site.

I’m also working on updating my resumé.

Why? Oh, no reason. *innocent look*

Uh oh. Now I’ve done it.

I picked up an old Commodore monitor and VCR at a garage sale today. They came with an antenna, so I now have a TV.

Ho boy. I’m watching Saturday Night Live for the first time in … years.

Oops, and now I’m watching X-Files.

Well, I don’t think I’ll become the TV addict I used to be. I have too much stuff going on in my life.

But at least I’ll be able to go to Suspect now and actually watch some of those cool videos I’ve been browsing.

God, it’s hot tonight…

Things I learned at this

Tuesday, July 17th, 2001

Things I learned at this weekend’s Epoch event:

  1. If you’re going to deliver a killing blow to someone from behind, don’t just stand there and wait for him to drop. He might not.
  2. If you’re going to wear a kilt, bug spray is a must.
  3. So is sunscreen.
  4. If someone teaches you a magical tune to use against water creatures, damn well use it!
  5. A Scottish thistle worn jauntily on the side of the tam may be fashionable, but it’s also very prickly.
  6. The Kaern, unlike my own cats, actually like penny whistle music.
  7. Wearing a skirt + talking like Groundskeeper Willie + playing the whistle = Player’s Award!

Oof. I’ve been slacking with this blog business, haven’t I?

I have an excuse, though. I’ve been preparing all this week for this weekend’s Epoch event. I got my costume and weapons together and wrote some of my character’s back story. (It’s in plain text with no line breaks, so open it in a text editor or be prepared to scroll sideways a lot.)

Unfortunately, after last night meeting, I’ll have to do some re-writing. There are some clashes with the established story. It’s not a big deal, though. I forgot some elements of Uilleam’s character myself, like his penny whistle.

And now that I’m going to be a brewer for The Ladle and Cauldron, I have to work that in, too.

I’ve also been working on a piece for the radio show, and that went on the air yesterday. I don’t think it went well. Then again, I was doing a tape/talk … with myself … using notes that I wrote on the subway on the way to the studio … and running the clips live off my minidisc…. so you couldn’t really expect it do go over really smoothly.

Anyway, I can put it all behind me this weekend and all I’ll have to worry about is getting killed in my sleep or catching some deadly plague. Aaaah… so relaxing, this Epoch.
