Save Our Sofas is a

Save Our Sofas is a group protesting against the disapperance of comfortable spots to sit and read in Indigo and Chapters stores.

Their site’s colour scheme hurts my brain, but I had to link to it given my previous rant against Chapters/Indigo.

Way back in ‘97, I talked to an Indigo store manager about the store’s philosophy. He said he thought of the store as “a place where people can meet and spend the day.”

Now, it seems, Chapters/Indigo wants you to go in, get your damn book and get out. No browsing!

I found the SOS link on MeFi, who apparently think the whole thing’s a hoax. But I can attest that chairs at the downtown Chapters
have almost completely disappeared and they’ve moved the magazine rack away from the ledge by the window, so people can’t sit and read
anymore.

Also found in the Montreal Gazette (warning: ugly-ass canada.com site ahead).

I think the Save our Sofa thing makes total sense. First they remove the sofas. Then they remove the toilets. Before you know it, there’s nothing left to make these big box book stores worth a visit.

Also I would like to mention that the protestors were one groovy looking group of characters.

    SAVE OUR SOFAS YES!!!!
