There was an interview with Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray on As It Happens last night.

He was talking about tax reform and presented his position with an intelligence and forthrightness I’m not accustomed to seeing in a politician.

All I kept thinking is, “Why couldn’t we have a mayor who’s a self-described ‘tax-geek’ rather than a vaguely embarrassing mascot?”

Avast! One o’ me scurvy yarns from yesterday’s dispatch was listed on that groggy site called Fark.

It’s astonished at how mealy-mouthed CNN can be when describing the U.S. military’s actions in Iraq, especially when they screw up.

“A shootout involving Iraqi police and U.S. forces developed into a fierce gunbattle early Friday in central Iraq, killing at least 10 people apparently by mistake, local officials said.”

From that lead sentence you have no idea who killed whom.

How about this?

“U.S. soldiers mistakenly opened fire on Iraqi police officers that ran though an American checkpoint, killing eight and wounding five other people, a doctor says.”

A little clearer wouldn’t you say?

Tomorrow’s my last day on the 4 a.m. writing-about-the-bombing-du-jour shift.

Instead, I’ll be writing things like this and that.

Much better, I think.
